Everyone I had arrived with closed in around me before I could blink. Spooky had gone still in my arms, anticipating an attack, but neither opposing warlock moved.

Nicholas just stared at me, stunned. “Is this true?”

Don’t tell them, Spooky intoned.

“I’m pretty sure they already know,” I muttered back to him.

Nicholas seemed to comprehend that I was speaking to Spooky and not him. Maybe he really had known a true familiar in his past.

Pete cleared his throat. “She can’t be, dad. The spirits would have told me.”

He was extremely new to his powers if he thought that. While the spirits could convey information, they also took secrets to the grave . . . metaphorically speaking. Especially where those who helped them were concerned. Spirits liked channeling witches. They protected us, even those of us who were also necromancers.

Nicholas watched my expression as realization dawned on his face. “It is true, isn’t it?”

“I already told you as much,” Eric cut in.

Everyone turned their attention toward him. Those expressions that I could see were not friendly.

He absentmindedly spun side to side on his stool, not in the least bit worried. “Hey, don’t shoot the messenger. I just call them like I see them.”

“But how?” Callie asked.

“It’s a gift.” He spun on his stool again, then looked pointedly at Elliot.

Uh oh. If he could tell that I was a necromancer, he could also probably tell that Elliot was an augmentor. Elliot looked absolutely green. His secret was just as dangerous as mine, perhaps more so.

Eric gave him a little wink. “Don’t worry. Your secret is safe with me.”

Callie glanced at Elliot in confusion, but didn’t say anything.

“All right,” I said, hoping to distract everyone. My secret might already be out, but I could at least protect Elliot’s. “The cat is out of the bag. Pete and I are both necromancers, and that’s probably why this witch is after us. I don’t know how she found out about Pete,” I glanced at both of my sisters. “But I have an idea of how she might have found out about me.”

“Are you sure about this?” Logan asked, knowing what I was getting at.

I wasn’t, but I nodded. If Atticus was behind this witch going after me, and she was already going after Pete, then he knew what Pete was. He had already lost Malcolm, and he knew I wouldn’t help him, so Pete was his only option.

I finally set Spooky down on one of the stools as I turned toward Nicholas. “I think this whole series of events might have started when an old warlock spirit found me in Twilight Hollow. In life, he sold his soul to a demon, making him immortal. A witch hunter sacrificed himself to bind the warlock to his grave. I accidentally freed him, and now he’s after me. It would stand to reason that he’s after Pete too.”

Everyone in the room fell silent enough that I could hear a car pulling up outside. The engine cut off, and two car doors opened and shut.
